ITC Limited is a prominent Indian multi-business conglomerate headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal. Established in 1910 under the colonial name Imperial Tobacco Company of India Limited, the company has undergone a massive transformation over its century-long history, diversifying its portfolio from traditional tobacco manufacturing into fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), luxury hotels, paperboards and packaging, agribusiness, and software services.

It is one of India’s largest and most valuable private sector corporations, recognized globally for its environmental sustainability achievements, including being water-positive, carbon-positive, and solid waste recycling-positive for over a decade.

History and Evolution

The Colonial Era (1910–1947)

The company was incorporated on August 24, 1910, as a subsidiary of the British-American Tobacco Company. It commenced operations from a leased building in Radha Bazar Lane in Calcutta, eventually purchasing a plot on Chowringhee Road in 1928 to construct its landmark headquarters, Virginia House.

During this era, the company set up cigarette factories across the country (including Monghyr and Bangalore) and pioneered agricultural outreach to secure high-quality leaf tobacco from local farmers.

Indianization and Diversification (1970s)

As the company progressively increased local Indian ownership, it was renamed the India Tobacco Company Limited in 1970, and later I.T.C. Limited in 1974.

Under the leadership of legendary chairman Ajit Narain Haksar, the first Indian chairman of the company, ITC launched a bold diversification strategy in the mid-1970s:

  1. Hotels: Entered the hospitality sector in 1975 by acquiring and opening Hotel Chola in Chennai, followed by iconic properties like Mughal in Agra and Maurya in New Delhi.
  2. Paperboards: Established Bhadrachalam Paperboards Limited in 1975, creating a highly integrated supply chain for packaging materials.

The e-Choupal Initiative

In 2000, ITC launched its revolutionary e-Choupal initiative, a digital program designed to empower rural Indian farmers. By installing internet-equipped computers in village community centers (managed by a trained local farmer called a Sanchalak), the platform provides:

  • Real-time Data: Free access to local weather forecasts, crop management practices, and global market price trends.
  • Direct Selling: Allowing farmers to sell their agricultural produce directly to ITC hubs, eliminating middleman exploitation and significantly increasing farm yields and incomes.

The program has connected over 4 million farmers across 35,000 villages in India, becoming a world-renowned case study on rural digital enablement at the Harvard Business School.

Corporate HQ: Virginia House

Located at Chowringhee Road in central Kolkata, Virginia House remains the historical nerve center of the conglomerate. Constructed in the classic neo-Georgian style, the building stands as an architectural landmark of Kolkata’s central business district, symbolizing the corporate legacy and enduring industrial strength of Bengal.
